How Much Can You Earn Playing STEPN? (+Beginner Strategies)

(Last Updated 07/06/2022 12:00 UTC)

Hi! I'm guessing you're here because you're hearing about STEPN, a web3 Move2Earn game that incentives users to get outside and walk, jog, or run.

You may also be hearing about the significant earnings potential of the game and are wondering if it's real. Well, as of this writing, it is real and (as important!) it's very fun.

However, STEPN is a relatively new game, with lots of inherent risks. You'll see many opinions on how long these earnings can last - ranging from tomorrow to forever. While it can be fun to speculate, we don't like to pretend that we have a crystal ball to see into the future of STEPN - so we'll stay away from all of that. Given the volatility of crypto markets and NFTs in general, we always advise that you should only invest money that you'd be willing to lose. After all, you're not going to earn up to hundreds (yes, hundreds) of dollars per day by doing something as simple as walking without taking significant risks.

If you're fortunate enough to be in a position where the idea of getting paid to walk, run, or jog is worth the accompanying risks, then we've created this guide to give you a general idea of how much you can earn by playing STEPN.

If you're new to the STEPN community, feel free to reach out to us and we'd be happy to discuss any of these strategies and/or any of the other guides and tools on this site!

NOTE: Nothing on this site is financial or investment advice. Please do your own research.

Strategy Overview

There are many different strategies that you can pursue within STEPN, and that's part of what makes it so fun!

Below is an overview of the most basic strategies. They're all very simple, and the only variable is how many sneakers you choose to buy (which determines the amount of time that you can earn for). We're hoping to expand this with more complex strategies soon! This table was created using our STEPN Earnings Calculator.

Basic STEPN Strategies

Resources

  • There are also many other users in the STEPN community posting awesome, helpful content! We hope to compile and highlight their work here soon.

Going Solo

Buy 1 Sneaker

This is the least expensive and easiest way to get started with STEPN, and is what we would recommend for many new users! It's a great way to dip your toes in and try this all out.

And let's be honest - it's still a lot to invest into an NFT sneaker + the earnings are nothing to scoff at!

With 1 sneaker you'll be able to earn for 10 minutes per day. This will be one of the fastest ways to ensure you earn back your investment quickly (typically around 30 days) and therefore carries the lowest risk of all of these strategies. But of course, lower risk = lower reward!

To achieve the earnings shown in the table above, you would need to level up your sneaker to level 9, which is a common strategy for most users with 1 sneaker. Learn more about sneaker levels here. You can see the optimal level for your sneaker with our STEPN Earnings Calculator.

Buy 3 Sneakers

If 10 minutes of earning sounds too small for you and you're willing to invest more into STEPN, then you may want to consider buying 3 sneakers. This will allow you to earn for 20 minutes, doubling your earnings (yes, you read that right - you will still only be able to earn for 10 minutes if you own 2 sneakers!)

We highly recommend checking out our guide, Everything to Know About Sneakers in STEPN, before buying a sneaker. The most important thing to know when buying multiple sneakers is that only one of them will determine how much you earn. Therefore, you really only need one sneaker with strong attributes. Of course, if you can find 3 good sneakers without paying more for them, you should do so!

Additionally, some people may say that you want different sneakers for different situations. That may be true, but it's not necessary to be successful with STEPN and is beyond the scope of this guide.

With multiple shoes, we'd still suggest looking at all of the resources listed at the top of this guide. You can still use all of them regardless of how many sneakers you own!

To achieve the earnings shown in the table above, you would need to level up your primary sneaker to level 19, which is a common strategy for most users with 3 sneakers. Learn more about sneaker levels here. You can see the optimal level for your sneaker with our STEPN Earnings Calculator.

Buy 9 Sneakers

And if 20 minutes still isn't enough, you invest further to earn for 45 minutes! However, this will require 3x'ing your investment to get to 9 sneakers. If you own anywhere from 4 to 8 sneakers, you'll still only be able to earn for 20 minutes.

Again, you technically only need 1 sneaker with good attributes to maximize your earnings (unless you're working on a more complex strategy!).

To achieve the earnings shown in the table above, you would need to level up your primary sneaker to level 28, which is a common strategy for most users with 3 sneakers. Learn more about sneaker levels here. You can see the optimal level for your sneaker with our STEPN Earnings Calculator.

With a Partner

If you've got someone to join you for your walks or runs - we highly recommend it! Getting out and walking jogging, or running together can be a great relationship builder. Oh, and....it's a great way to maximize your STEPN earnings!

All of the Solo strategies we mentioned above can be implemented with 2 people. So, you could each buy 1, 3, 9, etc. sneakers. This is great for your earnings because you can increase your total "earning time" without buying as many sneakers. For example, you can see from the table at the top of this guide that 2 users with 1 sneaker each can earn as much as 1 user with 3 sneakers!

If you plan on playing STEPN with a partner, you'll need to each have at least 1 sneaker that is optimized for earnings (again, check out the resources at the top of this guide to help you figure that out!).

You'll of course need 2 separate STEPN accounts on 2 separate phones. It's up to you whether you want to manage it all from one account and transfer sneakers to the second account, or if you want to send assets to both accounts and buy sneakers in each one separately. It is relatively easy to transfer sneakers and tokens between accounts if you choose to go that route.

Note: If you're an individual user planning to use multiple accounts across multiple devices to cheat the system, you will likely be banned.

Advanced Strategies

Higher Sneaker Qualities

There are multiple sneaker qualities in STEPN. All of these strategies refer to Common sneakers, which are the lowest quality. Higher-quality sneakers will cost significantly more, but will also allow you to increase your potential earnings. More detail here.

Minting

Minting allows you to create a new sneaker from two existing sneakers. Depending on NFT and token prices, minting new sneakers could be a cheaper way to get more sneakers than buying on the marketplace. It can also be profitable to mint new sneakers and sell them on the marketplace. For more detail on the minting process, check out our guide, Minting in STEPN.

If you'd like to calculate potential minting profits to determine the best way to get a new sneaker (or how profitable a minting strategy could be), try our STEPN Minting Tool.

BSC Chain

You'll see when you create your STEPN account that you can choose either the Solana (SOL) chain, or the Binance Smart Chain (BSC, or BEP20). You can also switch between these chains in the app and hold assets on both. They are essentially two different versions of the same game. All of the gameplay will be nearly identical, but the economics (cost of sneakers, potential earnings) are different.

All of the guides and tools on this site are in reference to Solana chain. At this time of writing, the BSC chain is smaller, newer, and carries significantly more risk (and potentially more reward) due to significantly higher prices. We hope to have more resources for the BSC chain soon.

Conclusion

That's all for now. These are all basic strategies, and we hope to add more complex strategies soon!
